STONEWORK

Stone has been and will become life once again. The unique ecology of a place arises in the dance between twisting and turning matter. Rain and wind chip away at stone, the miniscule bits of which provide critical nutrients to living bodies. The unique conglomorations of eroded stone and decaying matter (dirt!) sets the stage for the plant, fungal, bacterial, and animal life that emerges from it (soil!).

We prefer to work with locally gathered stone (on site if possible!), and to retain the ecological function of that rock, for example, by not removing stone from riparian areas where its nooks and crannies form a rich tapestry of aquatic life. We are experienced in formed concrete, but try to minimize this material as it has high ecological and financial costs. Recycled building masonry (old bricks, blocks, and cut stone) are favorites of ours.
